Ken Dodd

Ken started with
the Dallas Fire Department on
July 1, 1959
and retired from active service on August 7, 1990. Ken’s first
station assignment was old 17’ s at Greenville & Lewis. In 1971,
Ken made Driver and drove Engine 29 out of Station #8. In 1973, he
made Lieutenant and was assigned to Truck 37. Very quickly Ken made
Captain and was assigned to Engine 41. Later the Department switched
the Captains to the truck companies in double company houses, so Ken
moved over to Truck 41 until his retirement in 1990.
Ken was very active
in the Department and gave a lot back to the Department. He wasn’t
one to sit around, but was one to get involved. Ken became the
secretary/treasurer of the Dallas Professional Firefighters
Association. He later ran and became the President of the
Association. Ken also had an interest in not only his retirement,
but the benefits to all retirees. So he became a trustee to the
Pension Board and was later elected as the Chairman of the Pension
Board. He served in this position from 1977 to 1990.
Ken gave a lot back
to the Department with the activities that he was involved with and
helped provide for the future of the Dallas Fire Department and it’s
members. The Dallas Firefighters Museum was fortunate to have Ken
become our Curator in December of 1998 and he is still a valued member
of our Department.
Phillip Foley
Phillip started with the Dallas
Fire Department on October 16, 1957 and retired on October 16, 1981.
During his tenure with the Department, Phillip obtained the rank of
Driver-Engineer. His first station assignment was 27’s at Northwest
Highway and Douglas. When this station opened, it was rural farmland
and grass fires were a common occurrence. In 1965, Phillip was
transferred to Station 3 and became one of three firefighters that
drove the Mayor’s Cadillac that was housed at 3’s. He drove for
Mayors R.L. Thornton, Earl Cabell, Wes Wise, and Erik Johnson. In
1974, Phillip was promoted to Driver and went to Station 4 to drive
the Deputy Chief. He also drove 29 Engine, 47 Truck, 1 Engine, and
18 Engine before his retirement in 1981.
Phillip went into the construction
industry after retirement and dabbled with several rental property
until he came into the Museum in January 2005 to buy a ball cap.
There, he visited with Kenny Dodd and with Kenny’s enthusiastic
persuasion, he applied to assist us as an Assistant Curator.
We are pleased to have Phillip back in an active role with Dallas
Fire-Rescue and a valuable member of the Museum.
